Borrowing money in Australia means there will be a credit rating check. The credit score one gets determines if they qualify for a loan, how much they can get, and at what cost. The method used to calculate the credit rating is a point-based system where the higher the points, the better the chances of getting the loan and at cheaper interest rates. A poor rating can result in loan refusal, or a loan that is smaller than what is needed and a higher rate of interest. All lending agencies in Australia use the services of the official credit reference agencies like Veda Advantage or Dun & Bradstreet for credit information on an individual. Using this credit history, each lender comes up with their own credit score because they all have their own criteria. This gives the borrowing party the chance to get approval with some lenders, even when another lender may have declined them credit.

Credit score and credit history are two different things. In Australia, the credit history is collected by an agency and stored until requested by a lender; there is a second credit history that is being collected by the bank of the credit seeker. The credit history being collected by the agencies stores any defaults, court judgments, and bankruptcies. It does not store any information regarding the payments that have been cleared. In that sense, it is a negative reporting system. After going through the file and looking at their internal credit history for the individual seeking credit, they will generate a score for the individual.

When trying to raise the credit score, the first step is to figure out why the score is low and then set about to rectify the problem. It could be that there are mistakes in the credit history being held with one of the agencies. The way to clear this is to get a copy of the report and see for oneself what the credit agencies are seeing. To do this, just go to the site of the credit reporting agencies and request a copy of the report. Every resident of Australia is entitled to a free copy. If there are mistakes in the report, it is possible to have them removed by providing the appropriate proof

If, however, the problem is not there, then it must be with the bank’s internal credit history. This, too, can be corrected, although it may take a little time. The best way to improve this is to make sure that the checking account is never overdrawn. Learn to stay well within the credit card limits. A general rule should be that if something can’t be paid for at the end of the month, then do not buy it. Remember to pay off as much of the debt on credit cards as possible each month, instead of just paying the minimum amount. This will not only keep one debt free, but save money as well. Pay off any defaults showing up in the file and wait to have them removed. They are eliminated over a period of time.

The next step in improving the credit score is to apply for a $500 credit card line. Since the amount is not that great, most people will not be denied. Use this credit line – making sure to pay it back on time. After that, make certain not to apply for any other loans; this is because the fewer applications made, the fewer the number of inquiries made by lenders. All inquiries made get listed on the report. Try to stay current with the address and job. Also, open a savings account and try to save a little something at the end of each month.

Before making an application with any lender, do a little research and find one that is a bit lenient on credit scoring and apply with that one. When applying, include every asset that is owned. Include such things as checking and saving accounts, car superannuation, and shares. Borrow less than the limit so that the chances of rejection are minimized. Make sure there is a genuine loan purpose as not all loan purposes are accepted. Maintaining a good credit history can make a big difference when borrowing for big things like a house or a car.

Over the past few years poor economic conditions around the world has left its impact on Australia making it more difficult for many Australian’s to meet their monthly financial obligations due to a lowering or total loss of income. Many of these people were forced to either use credit cards far more frequently, pay some of their bills late, or avoid paying certain bills altogether. While this may have been a short term solution, it most likely led to the creation of a vast sum of person debt and ruined their credit rating. While most banks are in the practice of getting a credit report by doing a credit history check prior to providing a loan to check an applicant’s credit score, people with bad credit could still qualify for a variety of no credit check loans.

One of the easiest and most convenient ways of obtaining a no credit check loan is to get a loan through a payday lender. A payday loan is a short term loan which is secured by a future pay check that you will receive. Generally speaking, the term of the loan lasts no longer than a month and is designed to provide money to a borrower to cover expenses that they may need to pay prior to their next pay check.

The qualifications for a payday loan are typically much less stringent than they are for traditional personal loans. To qualify for this type of loan you will typically need to only provide proof of your employment, proof of your recurring income, and have a valid checking account. To get a payday loan all you will need to do is fill out a quick form online and provide the necessary information. Once all of the information is received, you could normally receive the loan directly deposited into your checking account within a few hours. The payday lender will then withdraw the funds they lent you, plus a fee and interest charge, from your checking account when the term of the loan is up. Since these loans are secured by your future pay check, there is no need for the lender to check your credit score.

While payday loans are a convenient and easy way to obtain a no credit check loan, these loans can be quite expensive. Considering the short-term nature of the loans, some payday loans could carry interest rates in excess of 300 percent. Because of this, it would be wise to consider other alternatives for no credit check loans.

Another alternative for no credit check loans would be to open a secured loan. A secured loan is a loan which is secured by a sum of money. Typically, a bank will require a secured loan borrower to deposit a certain sum of money into a checking or savings account. The bank will then provide a loan to a borrower for up to 100% of the amount of money which was deposited into the bank. The funds will then remain in the account as collateral to the loan until the loan is fully repaid. Since a secured loan provide essentially no risk to the bank, the bank will not have to run a credit check on the borrower.

While secured loans will require the borrower to place money into an account prior to receiving a loan, they do contain various benefits. The primary benefit of getting a secured loan, especially compared to receiving a payday loan, is that they are far less expensive. Since secured loans provide no risk to a bank, banks often charge very low interest rates on the loan. Furthermore, since the money is being deposited into a bank, the borrower will actually earn interest income at the same time.

Secured loans are also beneficial because they can help build a borrower’s credit score. Even though they don’t always pull credit prior to giving out a secured loan, a bank will provide the credit bureaus with the borrower’s history of making loan payments on time. After making the loan payments on time for at least 12 months, most consumers will begin to see their credit scores improve. This will eventually allow them to qualify for more traditional forms of credit and loans.

Having a good credit rating is one of the most important aspects of having good overall financial health. With a good credit rating a consumer will almost always qualify for low interest rates on credit cards and loans. With a bad credit score, a consumer will have a very tough time obtaining loans, and those that they are approved for will be charged with much higher interest rates and fees.

Obtaining a Free Credit Report

Due to the high cost of having bad credit, it is important for all consumers to regularly monitor their credit reports. Even people who do not plan on making a large purchase in the next few years should be sure to regularly check their credit to ensure they are not going to be victims of identity theft. While many people may believe that receiving a credit report can be expensive or confusing, all consumers qualify for a free credit check from the major credit bureaus at least once per year and receiving a current report can be completed in just minutes.

Review Reports

Once a consumer has requested their free credit check from one of the credit bureaus, the first thing they should do is to scan the credit report for accuracies. They must review all of the currently open and historic creditors on the report to ensure that they did in fact have an account open with each creditor listed. If they never did open an account with that credit it could have been placed on their report erroneously or someone could have opened the account in their name fraudulently. They should also review the historical timeliness of their repayment with each creditor. If a creditor is incorrectly reporting that they have missed or been late on a payment, it could be hurting their credit score quite a bit.

Contact Creditors

After they have requested and obtained their free credit check from a credit bureau, and have reviewed it for accuracy, consumers should contact any creditors which they feel are reflecting inaccurate information. Each creditor listed on their credit report should have a phone number that can be used to contact a department or individual dedicated to researching such claims. When calling the creditor, a consumer should keep a copy of the report at hand for reference. The consumer should discuss the complaint with the creditor and ask for the item to be removed. Most likely the creditor will need to look further into the situation and will promise to get back to the consumer. The consumer should be sure to continue to follow up with the creditor every few weeks until the situation is resolved.

Look For Areas of Improvement

After contacting creditors and having inaccurate information removed, a consumer should next review the report for areas where they could improve their credit score. Credit reports typically contain a section which summarizes derogatory information on their report. This could include having a history of making late payments, having a high credit utilization rate, or not having enough of a credit history. By reviewing this section a consumer could find ways to improve their score both immediately and over time. If the report states that a consumer has a high credit utilization rate, they could improve their score immediately by paying down their outstanding debt or by receiving an increase in their credit limit. If the report states that the consumer does not have a long history of credit, or has a history of making untimely payments, the consumer could improve their score over time by making all of their payments on time.

Continuously Review

For proper personal credit management, one of the most important tips to follow is to continue to take advantage of the free credit check. Since all three bureaus are required to provide a free report at least once per year, all consumers could receive a free report from one of the bureaus every four months. When the report is received, a consumer should continue to go through the process of verifying for accuracy, contacting the creditors if necessary, and looking for areas of improvement.

Anytime a consumer applies for a loan from a financier, lending agency or loan office the application will include an authorization to check the consumer’s credit file. The consumer credit file is a report compiled by a credit reporting agency and including all loans or credit account for a period of several years of the consumer’s credit history. The credit file can follow a consumer for life and while a good file will open the lending coffers, a bad credit report will slam those doors shut quicker than a blink.

Another factor lenders take into consideration is the amount of open loan dollars the consumer is in the process of paying back to lenders. This is known as the “debt to income ratio”. When the consumer applies for a new credit account or loan, they sign an authorization form for the lender to pull a copy of their most current credit file for review. All consumers contemplating applying for a loan should do a credit check of their own credit file at least 14 days prior to submitting an application so they are not surprised by any information contained in their own file.

What will a Lender See when they Check My Credit File?

A lender is specifically seeking information about the consumer’s ability to repay the loan they are submitting an application for. Lenders will take into account the number of open accounts currently active for the consumer, the amount of dollars open in loans the consumer is in the process of repaying and their on-time payment history for the last several years.

Lenders also ask consumers personal questions which supplement the information contained within a credit file. They will generally inquire as to current employment, property owned outright and current liabilities, such as utility payments. Using this personal information, the lender will sometimes approve or reject the consumer on the basis of this initial interview. If the lender provides the consumer a tentative approval, the approval can be withdrawn based on a more in depth credit file review.

Rejections returned based on an initial interview generally do not affect a consumer credit file, as no inquiry was made for a copy of the file based on a formal application. If the consumers makes it through a basic interview and a credit file report is requested, this will appear on the consumer credit file as an inquiry. Many lenders will reject a consumer loan application based on the number on inquiries recently posted, even if the credit file itself contains no untoward information.

Bad Credit Situations

Consumers who are fully aware of their credit status generally have a better time applying for a loan; especially if they are able to identify and clear up problem areas on their credit file. Working with lenders who have noted unpaid loans, or poor payment history, can be contacted directly by the consumer and arrangements can be made to cure the debt. Leaving an open bad credit loan on a consumer credit file can prevent new loans from being approved for a very long time, up to 10 years.

Judgments, unpaid loans and charge-offs can be detrimental for the consumer, as they do not just “go away” if they are ignored. Only by being proactive can a consumer repair or improve their credit score and credit report history. It is important for any consumer who pays off a loan, even if it is paid in a timely fashion, to verify the loan is noted as paid on their credit file. Lenders who view consumer credit file information that contains several open accounts can be very wary of lending additional funds to the consumer.

Even with a poor credit file report, lenders can be willing to work with a consumer to obtain a loan for major purchases. Consumers should be prepared to pay high down payments and higher than normal interest rates in exchange for an approved loan application. Most automobile, credit card and personal lending agencies will not be as willing to work with consumers to approve loans as these types of loans are generally considered “non-essential” for consumers. Home mortgage lenders are usually more willing to work with a consumer, some can even wrap open debt into the cost of the mortgage to allow a consumer to obtain a home loan.

Credit Files – A Necessary Evil

While many consumers see credit files as an invasion of privacy, it is actually a well thought out safeguard against identity theft. If a consumer submits a loan application with information that does not match the credit file, even down to the exact name and address on the file, the lending agency will normally decline the application. This process helps to safeguard consumers who are at risk for identity theft from criminals who would use their information to run up massive amounts of debt in someone else’s name.

Identity Theft and the Credit File Connection

Consumers should access a current copy of their credit file on an annual basis in order to ensure a criminal has not obtained their information fraudulently. Identity thieves can run up thousands of dollars in debt a consumer will be liable for. It is an extremely expensive process to clear fraudulent accounts from a credit file and it can takes several years to completely resolve issues on credit file accounts. It is also important, when possible, for consumers to only apply for the minimal amount of loans necessary for major purchases such as cars and homes.

Around the world, identity theft costs consumers, corporations and governments billions of dollars annually. Keeping personal information secure and frivolous credit card accounts to a minimum can go a long way toward preventing personal information from falling into the wrong hands. Inactive credit card accounts should be closed directly through the company that holds the card and loans, where available, should be applied for in person or through a secure internet site.

While identity theft is not on the forefront of the loan application checklist, consumers should be aware of where their information is being submitted and who will have access to that information. No consumer should provide their personal information over the phone to someone who has contacted them with a solicitation for a loan. This is a ploy that is often used by criminals seeking enough personal information from a consumer to steal their identity and obtain money, goods or services in the consumer’s name. Consumers should inquire for information from the lender regarding who will be handling their application, how long the application process should take and who they can contact directly regarding their application if they feel it is taking an undue amount of time.

There is no 100% secure method for protecting a consumer’s identity. Loans are a necessary part of life and assist people with purchases of homes, automobiles and major purchases, such as appliances. Being conscientious and using common sense when applying for loans can be the best protection available. Diligent consumers who obtain their credit file copies annually and verifying that file contains correct information are less likely to be turned down for a loan when they need one; they are also less likely to become a victim of identity theft throughout their credit file lifetime.

Some people believe a few small damages or mistakes on their credit report are not a big deal; this could not be further from the truth. It is imperative that a person repairs their credit report, as credit at one time or another will be needed. In fact, some employers will even look at a job candidate’s credit report before making a decision to hire them. Buying a home or a vehicle also requires a person to have a somewhat decent credit report.

When a person has a bad credit report, they are more likely to pay higher interest rates on loans they do qualify to obtain, which only cost the borrower more money than necessary. There are many people that do not even qualify for home or car loans because their credit report is so damaged, making it all the more important to repair any damages. Most people do not know where to begin to repair their credit report, but by following some simple tips a person can rest assured that it is possible.

If you or someone you know is looking for ways to repair your credit report, then it is imperative to follow the tips listed below:

Always Analyse Your Credit Report

If you do not look at your credit report, then how do you know what needs to be fixed? In order to determine what repairs need to take place on a credit report, the first step to take is to thoroughly analyse the report. There are several sites that enable you to obtain a free credit check online, take advantage of these sites. Sometimes there will even be mistakes on your credit history report. Mistakes can be easily fixed, but they must be identified first. You are the best person to identify whether or not there are any mistakes on your credit report, so always make sure you take plenty of time to thoroughly analyse it.

Start Paying off Existing Debt

After any mistakes have been fixed on your credit report, it is then time to start repaying any existing debts you have. Debts come in both small and large forms, but they must always be repaid. It is always important to pay off your debts as quickly as possible, as this helps to lower your overall repayment amounts. Most small debts can easily be paid back; it is the larger ones that may be causing you problems. Before you get behind on your larger debts, contact a credit counsellor. A credit counsellor can help you effectively organize your debts and help you begin paying them off in the most efficient manner possible.

Cut Up Your Credit Cards

There really is no sense in adding debt on to credit cards when you are trying to repair your credit report and lessen your debt. One missed payment on a credit card can be detrimental to your credit report. The easiest way to avoid adding up debt on a credit card is to cut it up, followed by closing the account after it is repaid. If you feel you that you need a credit card, then make sure it is only one, and also make sure it has a decent APR rate.

Use Automatic Bill Pay

If you are one of those people that have several monthly bills to pay, then consider utilizing automatic bill pay options. Utilizing these options enables you to rest assured each of your bills will be paid every month, and most importantly, that the bills will be paid on time. You can set up the automatic bill pay through your checking and/or savings account.

One of the easiest and most hassle free ways to get and maintain a good credit rating is to pay all bills before they are due. If there is a possibility an account is going to become past due, usually due to economic circumstances or illness, the consumer should contact the credit provider as soon as possible to set up payment arrangement to keep the account as current as the consumer is able to maintain. Under normal circumstances, lenders and credit providers are willing to work with the consumer in order to maintain a decent, if not excellent, credit file rating.

Consumers should mark their calendars and make it a habit, whether they are requesting a new credit account or not, to request a fresh copy of their credit file on an annual basis. This can prevent serious damage from poor reporting or identity theft. This also prevents forgotten accounts from becoming out-of-control; they can be identified and cleared as soon as possible. Checking a consumer credit file annually also works to prevent damage that can be caused by the growing epidemic of identity theft. Identity theft is not just a problem local to Australia, it is a worldwide issue and someone from anywhere in the world can hijack a credit file and use it for ill-gotten gain.

Credit providers, of all kinds, have individual criteria to follow when deciding whether to issue credit to a consumer. Even if the consumer is declined for a credit account or loan, it does not necessarily mean the consumer has a “bad” credit score on their file. It is important for consumers to identify with the declining credit provider what led to their decision. It may have simply been too many enquiries on a credit file turned the decision against the consumer. Awareness is one of the most important keys to maintaining a successful credit rating.

It is also important to remember that sometimes it takes time to clear up a not-so-good credit file. Even credit default notations that have been paid in full will remain on a consumer credit file for five years, as part of the consumer’s lending history. The longer the period of time the consumer maintains paid on time accounts, the better their credit score will become. In the instance where the credit default account is noted that the debtor is “confirmed missing”, which means the credit provider has been unable to locate the debtor through any and all available means, remain on a consumer credit file for a period of seven years.

Credit providers will make differentiating notation next to an account item on a consumer credit file to indicate the status of the account for other credit providers to see and analyse. These notations can include indications the account is current, paid in arrears, in default, in an uncollectible status or settled. Most of these are self-explanatory with the exception of a “settled” notation. This indicates to other credit providers the consumer has entered into an agreement with the creditor to pay the balance on the account for less than the total due. For instance, the consumer gets behind on payments for their charge card and offers, and pays, a one-time lump sum amount of money to clear their responsibility for the account. Noting “settled” next to the account indicates, yes, it is paid, but for less than the total amount due.

The information contained within a consumer credit file is one of the strongest factors to impact a consumer’s ability to receive financing. What is stated in the credit file will allow lenders to determine the consumer’s credit-worthiness. All lenders, including banks, retail establishments, mortgage lenders and other credit providers, will utilise the consumer credit file, along with other application information, to make a lending determination.

It is vital for consumers to keep up with their own credit file to determine, first and most important, whether the information in the file is accurate. In the modern age of technology, identity theft is a rampant global problem. Many consumers are completely unaware their information has been stolen until they get turned down for a loan or credit application. It is highly recommended any consumer looking for credit approval obtain a copy of their own credit file at least seven days prior to filing an application for credit. This can be done by doing a self credit check.

Obtaining a copy of a consumer credit file must be done by the person who is named in the file; it cannot be done by a third party who is not a credit or lending establishment. There is generally a fee for the first copy of a credit file, with additional fees for additional copies. These copies can be sent via email or regular mail directly to the requestor only.

What Actions Should Be Taken When Turned Down for Credit?

Each credit provider uses a different set of criteria for lending approval, depending on the type and amount of the loan or credit line requested. Mortgage lenders use an entirely different set of criteria than auto lenders or banks issuing credit cards. Some consumer credit files simply contain information that falls outside of a lender’s established guidelines for loan approval. Any consumer should request a copy of their credit file in order to identify any misinformation it may contain. This will also allow the consumer to identify any problem accounts that may be causing them to be declined for credit.

Common credit file problems that will cause a loan to be declined include overdue accounts, which are also known as Credit Defaults, and incorrect information in the credit file. Incorrect information can include an incorrectly spelled name, incorrect address or information that is included due to identity fraud and theft. There are several remedies that can be taken by the consumer in order to correct the information contained within a credit file.

Details that are included in overdue accounts can sometimes be corrected if the account has been paid to current or paid off since the account was originally reported. Consumers should contact the credit provider who is responsible for the credit account and request the information in their credit file be updated to reflect the correct current status. This task should be completed by the credit provider within five business days of the request. Credit Default listing that does not belong to the consumer should be reported to the listed credit provider so they can begin a thorough investigation for the consumer. If the listing is found to belong to someone other than the consumer listed on the credit file, the reporting credit authority should have the listing removed completely from the credit file.

Other remedies for inaccurate information include contacting the credit provider directly so they can investigate and correct the information contained within the consumer credit file. Consumers should also be conscientious of credit provider methods for determining credit worthiness. Each credit provider, lender and financier has different criteria for determining if they will offer credit to a consumer. Even if the consumer has remedied poor credit file references in the past, including judgments, bankruptcies and credit defaults, the credit provider may still make the determination the consumer is not yet credit worthy enough to receive funding.

What Actions Can be Taken if There Are Negative Indicators on a Credit File?

When there are credit defaults listed on a consumer credit file, they can detrimentally affect the consumer’s ability to receive funding. If an account showing as a credit default, but has been paid off, the credit provider should be contacted to update the information in the consumer credit file. The credit file should be updated within five days of the credit provider notifying the reporting agency the account has been paid in full.

If the negatively reported credit default does not belong to the consumer listed as the party on the credit file, the credit provider should be contacted in order to investigate why the file was reported. Consumers should provide the reference number which is listed as part of the account in the credit file so the credit provider can investigate the matter on behalf of the consumer. If the credit provider identifies the account as belonging to another consumer, they will notify the credit reporting agency and the listing should be removed from the credit file completely.

When a consumer believes a credit default has been reported on their credit file, and they are the owner of the account but disagree with the reporting, they can contact the reporting agency directly to dispute the listing. This will give the consumer the opportunity to address the matter with the credit provider and the listing will show as “in dispute” until such time it is resolved.

Although some credit defaults are not entirely the fault of the consumer, there is no remedy for the credit default listing on the report. If a consumer has a utility set up on a rented, or owned, residence, moves out and leaves the connection in their name for the new tenants, it is still their financial responsibility. If the utility is not disconnected and reset in the name of the new tenants and the account goes into default, the credit default listing will be posted to the original owner’s credit file.

Credit scores can be deeply affected by having defaults listed on the credit file. It is understandable, especially in today’s economic climate, if sometimes consumers fall behind on account payments. As these accounts become past due, credit providers will list them on the credit file as default accounts. The best route for consumers to take is to pay off their credit accounts as soon as possible. A credit score can be positively affected when a credit default is paid in full and listed as paid on the consumer credit file.

Identity theft and fraud, worldwide, has been estimated to cost consumers and businesses billions of dollars annually. One research study conducted in 2009 found approximately 4.4 million Australians were affected by incidents of identity theft. This reflected a 3% increase from the results found in 2008 by the same research group.

The purest definition of identity theft is the unlawful use of an individual’s identifying information in order to obtain credit for goods or services, including cash loans and property loans. It is extraordinarily difficult for a law-abiding consumer to recover from identity theft, as much time and expense is necessary to prove the correct identity of the consumer and get fraudulent account listings removed from their credit file. Unfortunately, around the globe, some consumers never recover from identity theft and go the rest of their lives with poor credit ratings caused by thieves.

One of the most important safeguards against identity theft is knowledge. All consumers should be aware of all credit applications they have personally submitted and what items are being reported to their credit file via a credit check. Knowledge of what is contained in a credit file can quickly alert a consumer to any unauthorized activity using their name. It is also important to keep documents such as birth certificates, security cards, credit cards and banking information in a secure location. If any of the types of documents turn up missing, it is important to report the fact to both the credit reporting agencies and law enforcement authorities as soon as possible.

Past bank statements, older than what is required to be kept by any taxing authority, should be shredded; along with other documents that are no longer needed but contain sensitive personal information. One common sense security method is to always keep bank and charge cards separate from the PIN access numbers. It is shocking how many consumers simply write their Personal Identification Number on the card itself, or on the carrying case in a purse or wallet.

If a consumer does suspect their identity has been stolen, co-operation with law enforcement and credit reporting agencies is essential. It is also important to note, as the process to rectify identity theft is long and arduous, each individual conversation and a short note of details, including the person the consumer spoke with.

Safety is the key, and is something most consumers do not think twice about, when it comes to protecting oneself against identity theft. Common sense should be used in every situation when it comes to financial information and no personal information should be released to a third party without full research by the consumer on who will be using their information. Phone and mail solicitations are a good way for thieves to access personal information, usually given by the consumer voluntarily. A good warning for any consumer is to not release any type of personal or financial information to someone who has contacted them soliciting the information. These types of information should only be released if the consumer initiated the contact and has full knowledge of the company that will be utilizing their information.

For most consumers, their credit file is an enigmatic mystery that has confusing information and unknown data in it. Many people believe this information is in some kind of secret code that only credit providers and financiers can understand. The truth is any consumer’s credit file can be obtained by doing a credit check and is easily deciphered with some basic, up-front knowledge.

Details included in a credit file often include basic consumer information including all the times credit has been applied for, in whose name the credit account was sought, which credit institution the credit was requested from, the amount of credit requested and the type of loan that was requested, including the intended purpose of the loan. This is basic information that is laid out in every credit file and lets lenders, creditors and financiers know how much credit the consumer is seeking approval for.

There is also identification related data which directly states who the consumer is through personal details including current name, former names, current and former addresses, gender, date of birth and driver’s license number data. The personal information for the consumer also includes the identification of any overdue credit accounts and accounts in default which have not been paid in over 60 days. Creditors, lenders and financiers will also be able to see any pending or closed bankruptcy information for the consumer, including the date the bankruptcy was, or is going to be, discharged.

Other identifying information that is usually included in the standard consumer credit file includes any court judgments, actions that have been taken through the legal system by former creditors, and any information for directorships or proprietorships the consumer may be involved with. It is important for creditors and lenders to know if the consumer is part of a business; and if they are how the current financial situation of the business looks.

Consumers should be forewarned and aware that any lender or financier seeking to review a consumer credit file must have permission of the consumer. Often, without the knowledge of the consumer, this consent is provided by clicking on the “I Agree” portion of an online application when asked if agreeing to the Privacy and Consent information provided by a lender. It is also good to be aware that once permission is granted by the consumer, there will be an enquiry line added to the consumer credit file. In many cases, multiple enquiries within a short time frame is cause to decline financing for a consumer. With several enquiries occurring on one credit file, lenders can often be lead to believe the consumer is desperate for a loan without being financially stable enough to pay the lender back what is borrowed.

Having a bad credit rating can prevent people from getting home mortgages and loans of any kind. Millions of people in Australia suffer with bad credit ratings. But there are some helpful ways to fix it and clear it up.

Search for Mistakes on Credit Reports

Statistics report that one in four people have at least one mistake on their credit report. These mistakes can definitely lead to getting labelled with a bad credit history. So these mistakes need to be cleared up. The best way to go about this is to obtain copies of the credit reports and go over each item very carefully. Scrutinize if all the details are correct including the name, address and all credit account history of the person in whose name the credit report is in. Just as carefully, examine all of the dates and the payment history and any personal identification numbers associated with the owner of the credit report.

It’s important to make corrections by notifying the credit bureaus in writing with letters as quickly as possible. If and when mistakes are seen, they will have to be corrected by Australian law, and this will help greatly improve the person’s overall credit rating.

Rip Up Most Credit Cards

Using credit cards causes people who are not so disciplined to pay their debts on time to get into trouble. That’s why it’s important not to be tempted to keep all of an individual’s credit cards. Keep only one major one for emergency use only. Then actually rip all the others up, including the department store cards, where high consumer debt can easily be accumulated. Throw them away so they can’t ever be used again and also don’t ever apply for new standard ones, even once a person’s credit history returns to excellent shape.

They can only get a person who likes to spend in trouble with amassing consumer debt. If the person doesn’t have but one credit card, this will force him to pay his expenses with either cash or check, which is the correct way to get out of debt and fix a person’s credit rating in the first place. Paying by cash or check doesn’t accumulate any high interest charges either as does paying with credit cards, so that’s another advantage.

Pay Off Existing Debt

It’s essential when trying to fix a bad credit rating to accurately go over every past debt a person has amassed and is on his credit report. Then he has to do his best to use whatever disposable income he has to pay off all those debts as quickly as possible given the amount of money he has to do so. If he doesn’t have a lot of disposable income, then he should still pay off all his debts in a slower fashion than if he had a bundle of money set aside to be able to pay the entire balances off all at once.

By paying off all existing debt, this says to prospective lenders that they can now become much more open to giving out new loans to the person because he doesn’t have any back financial obligations that would need to be paid off first before paying back a new loan such as a home mortgage or a car loan. All lenders love to see loan applicants without much of any consumer debt at all. This makes them first rate customers from their perspective so it’s essential to pay down every single debt as soon as possible.

Get A Secured Bank Card

One excellent method to helping re-establish a bad credit history is to obtain a secured credit card from a bank. This should be in a very small amount where the applicant puts up an equal sum of cash in exchange for getting a similar amount of credit extended to him, usually on one major credit card. He then buys small items and pays them back in full at least two weeks before the payment due date.

By doing this, he can show that he has the capacity to earn enough money to be able to pay back small amounts of consumer debt while still being able to keep the amounts in line with his income. This looks great to lenders as well when they see some consistent credit history activity occurring when they examine a loan candidate’s current credit file. This is the only other credit card the person looking to fix his credit should have, and he should only discipline himself to apply for just one secured card and no more.
